Why Do People Register Their Vehicles in Montana?

Because in most states, registering a vehicle is harder than it should be. High sales tax, surprise fees, emissions testing, inspections… registering a car, RV, trailer, or motorcycle can be an expensive hassle.

Montana offers a better option. It’s one of the few states that allows non-residents to form a Montana LLC and legally register vehicles through it. No sales tax, no inspections, no smog checks.

It’s not about gaming the system—it’s about understanding it. With two decades of local experience and 100,000+ successful registrations, we routinely help clients legally save $5,000–$15,000 or more, depending on the vehicle and home state.

No Sales or Property Tax

Montana is one of the only states with zero vehicle sales tax. And unlike many states that charge you annual vehicle property taxes based on the value of your car, Montana does not impose personal property tax on most vehicles. That means big savings. For exotic cars, RVs, and trailers, this can add up to $10,000 dollars saved, especially in high-tax states like California, New York, or Virginia.

No Inspections or Emissions Testing

Montana doesn’t require any emissions testing or vehicle inspections to register. That means no waiting in line, no risk of failure, and no surprise repairs. Many states—including California, New York, Colorado, Virginia, and Texas—require regular vehicle inspections, and emissions testing. These checks can be expensive, time-consuming, and stressful, especially if you own an older vehicle, an imported car, or a modified rig like a camper van, lifted truck, or custom motorcycle.

No Residency Requirement

Montana is one of the only states in the U.S. that allows non-residents to form an LLC and register vehicles through it without ever setting foot in the state. That means you can legally form a Montana LLC and register your car, truck, SUV, RV, trailer, or motorcycle under that business, even if you live in another state. It’s a popular strategy for exotic car buyers, full-time RVers, and savvy vehicle owners looking to avoid high sales tax, emissions testing, and inspection requirements in their home state.

Permanent Registration Option

Montana offers permanent vehicle registration for eligible vehicles, including cars, pickups, SUVs, trailers, RVs, and motorcycles that are over 11 years old. Once registered, these vehicles never need to be renewed. You’ll never deal with yearly registration fees or paperwork again. This is a huge benefit for people who want long-term convenience and peace of mind, especially for secondary vehicles, collector cars, or tow vehicles.

Will I have to pay the Montana Luxury Tax?

That depends. Here’s a quick breakdown of how the Montana Luxury Tax works.

  • Light Vehicles. If you own a light vehicle (typically a car or pickup truck) with an original MSRP equal to or greater than $150,000, then you will need to pay an $825 annual luxury tax until the vehicle is 11 years old.
  • RVs/Motor homes. If your vehicle has an original MSRP equal to or greater than $300,000, then you will need to pay an $800 annual luxury tax until the vehicle is 11 years old.

The good news? If you’re planning to buy a high-value vehicle, the Montana luxury tax is significantly lower than what you’d pay in state sales tax.

Purchasing a $500,000 car in Florida? That’d be $35,000 in sales taxes. If you choose to register that car in Montana instead, you’ll pay $800 a year until the vehicle is 11 years old.

That means even if it’s a brand new car, you could save at least $25,000 in sales tax by registering with a Montana LLC!

Will I have to pay a county option tax?

No, you will not have to pay a county option tax if you register through us. We’re in the City of Kalispell, so you can hire us to register your vehicle here and you don’t have to pay a county option tax like you would with our competitors in other counties.

If you’re registering on your own in another county, you can find your county’s website and contact information through the Montana MVD’s County Location finder.

How do I register a vehicle with a Montana LLC if I have a lien?

If you currently have a lien or may have a lien in the future, this process is a little more complicated. In some cases, this process cannot be completed if you have a lien. For more information regarding registration with a lien, please contact us.

Can I register an imported vehicle under a Montana LLC?

Import vehicles have a very different set of requirements. If you have an imported vehicle that you’re looking to have us register under a Montana LLC, please contact us.

Do I need to file an annual report?

Yes. All Montana companies, including those formed for registering a vehicle, are required to file an Annual Report with the Secretary of State. Annual reports must be filed every year by April 15th. If you miss your due date, you will be charged a $15 penalty fee, and your business could be administratively dissolved by the state.

In order to help keep your company from falling out of good standing with the state (and risking your vehicle LLC), we include enrollment in our Annual Report Compliance Service at no upfront cost. We’ll send you reminders before you annual report is due, and if you want us to handle the filing for you, we’ll take care of it for $50 plus state fees. You can always cancel service in your online account.
