What are the requirements to become an licensed nurse in Montana?

Nursing in Montana is regulated by the Montana Board of Nursing (MBN).  You must be licensed by the MBN to practice nursing in Montana.

To become a Registered Nurse (RN) in Montana, applicants must complete an approved nursing program, pass the National Council Licensing Examination for Nursing, and have a valid US Social Security Number.  There are no experience requirements to be a RN.

How do you get a Montana RN license?

Submit the Application for Licensure by Examination to the Montana Board of Nursing (MBN). Include the fee and a passport size photo.  You must also make sure your educational intuition sends your official transcripts to the MBN.  You must also register with the test provider, PearsonVue. First time exam takers may elect to apply for a temporary permit. You have 3 years and five attempts to pass the exam.

If you want to prescribe medication, you must apply for prescriptive authority as an APRN.  Nurse midwives, anesthetists, and practitioners are eligible for prescriptive authority. To qualify, you must complete a graduate level course in pharmacology, phamacotherapeutics, and the clinical management of drug therapy related to your specialty.  Submit the Application for Prescriptive Authority, necessary documents, and the $100.00 fee to the MBN.

Does a Montana APRN need to form a certain type of business entity?

In addition to becoming a Montana licensed APRN, you may want to start your own APRN practice.  Registering your Montana business entity with the Secretary of State offers many benefits and protections for APRNs. Montana allows APRNs to choose the entity that best suits their needs.  APRNs may form standard partnerships, corporations, limited liability companies, etc. APRNs may also create professional corporations (PC) and professional limited liability companies (PLLC). These professional entities allow licensed individuals to form a corporation or LLC for the purpose of practicing their profession.  Shareholders must also be licensed to render the service as must half of the officers and directors. Montana does not require entities to include a description of the service (such as the word “APRN”) in the business name.  If you choose to form a PC in Montana, you are required to file the articles of incorporation with the licensing authority, in this case, the Montana Board of Nursing.
